DePin project gains momentum on Solana blockchain
Decentralized Physical Infrastructure (DePIN) is leveraging blockchain technology to enable users to take ownership of their data. A popular example of a DePIN project today is Helium, a wireless Internet of Things (IoT) network that currently runs on the Solana blockchain. In 2019, Helium launched a decentralized cellular network and quickly expanded its global coverage, with currently 392,090 hotspots worldwide, according to Helium Explorer. In addition to Helium, another DePIN project built on Solana and generating interest is Hivemapper, which hopes to completely reinvent the mapping industry. Gabe Nelson, director of operations and marketing for Hivemapper, said the company’s founder and CEO Ariel Seidman has worked in the mapping industry for more than 20 years. During this time, a big problem Seidman hopes to solve is finding ways to create maps in a cost-effective, scalable way.
